Sorrel Sangria

Sorrel is synonymous with a true Trini Christmas. And well, the best way to spread holiday cheer is with sangria, duh. This red wine sangria made with homemade sorrel, warm spices and fresh fruit is crisp and refreshing. Make ahead and then set the pitcher out as your guests are arriving.

INGREDIENTS
  • For the homemade sorrel:
    •  4 cups water 
    • 1 pound fresh sorrel, cleaned and peeled 
    • 1 bay leaf 
    • 2 cinnamon stick 
    • 5 cloves 
    • 1⁄2 inch ginger
    •  1⁄2 cup sugar
  • For the sangria:
    •  2 1⁄2 cups homemade sorrel 
    • 1 bottle Shandy Carib Sorrel
    • 1 bottle dry red wine 
    • 1/3 cup brandy 
    • Cinnamon stick
    • 1 orange
    • 1 apple 
    • Ice
DIRECTIONS
  1. Shop for all the ingredients at the JTA Supermarkets branch closest to you!
  2. Place the peeled sorrel, water, bay leaf, ginger, clove and sugar together in a large pot.
  3. Set over medium high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer about 20 minutes.
  4. Strain the mixture, keeping the liquids and discarding the solids.
  5. To make the sangria, place the chopped apple and orange into a large jug or punch bowl.
  6. Add in one bottle Shandy Carib Sorrel, red wine and brandy and mix.
  7. Place in the fridge and allow at least one hour for the fruits to soak.
  8. Serve in large glasses! Yum!
